TAILS (SILVER WISHES BOOK 1) BY WJ SCOTT

BLURB:

Heart-stopping, tail-dropping adventure from award-winning children’s author WJ Scott.
FINALIST in The Wishing Shelf Book Awards UK 2017 9-12 yrs.
Sometimes loss is the only thing that saves you.
Last summer during the dreaded hunting season, Kywah lost his tail, his magic, and his value as a Silvertail. Now the hunters have returned and he’s terrified. Especially when he recognizes Samsa, the very hunter that cut off his tail, and ruined his life.
But when the pack becomes trapped in the foothills with no escape, Kywah realizes he’s their only hope. Without a tail, he’s worthless to the hunters and their wizard masters. If he can escape, he can find help for his pack. All he has to do is locate the Wise One and retrieve the Deep Magic.
Which would be hard enough even if he still had the magical tail sense his kind are born with. But what choice does he have? If he doesn’t take the risk, his pack will lose everything. And because Kywah knows exactly how that feels, he can’t let it happen.

MY REVIEW:

A story that includes fairies, wizards, magic, mythical creatures, and a heart-stopping adventure. When the Hunters captured young Kywah and cut off his tail, he was sure his entire life was over. After all, the tail was the pride of every Silvertail. Not only was it a sensory tool, but a status symbol and held their magic. But Kywah had survived the brutal attack for a reason.

The hunter sold Kywah’s tail to an aging and decrepit Wizard who was intent on regaining the power and magic he once had. Using the tiny bits of silver he harvested from the tail, his hope sprang high that he would once again capture the magic he needed to take back his power. When the Wizard offers to pay top dollar for as many Silvertails as the hunters can harvest. Kywah’s clan, and all other Silvertails are placed in grave danger.  The one thing that would save the Silvertail clan was the “Deep Magic” that could only be attained from The Wise One. Kywah volunteered to go. After all, he no longer had a tail and the hunters would not seek him. My heart broke for this youngling over and over as he struggled to save his clan, risking his own life. When he was captured, I chewed my nails. When he met Buster Boy, the Labrador Retriever, a friendship formed that would bond the two for life.

If you love a story with Gypsies, fairies, magic and plenty of tension and adventure, you are going to love this book. These sweet animals stole my heart in their struggle for survival.

A Cold Tomorrow – Book Review #RRBC

5 star

In this sequel to the first book of the Point Pleasant Series,  A Thousand Yesteryears,  Mae Clair takes us on a fast-paced adventure that doesn’t end until the last page.

Katie Lynch stops to help a motorist in trouble and gets more than she bargained for. Mysteries begin unfolding all around.  A coded message, a policeman that vanishes into thin air and unexplained phenomena galore set the stage for A Cold Tomorrow .

We met the famous supernatural mythical creature, The Mothman, in the first book of this series. But, it is becoming almost as much of a character in these books as are the people. Mae gives us a glimpse into the creature’s mind when it is wounded and Caden  is able to communicate with him. All the characters in this story capture me. The two brothers, Ryan and Caden, both in law enforcement – rugged and good looking, Katie Lynch, a single mom raising a son, Eve Parrish, owner of the famed historic hotel, Sarah who loves digging around in archived historical records, and even Katie’s renegade mom who really comes to life and redeems herself in this novel.

Mae does an exquisite job of weaving this story with lots of unexpected and unpredictable twists and turns. Giving the reader a deeper look into Indrid Cold and Evening Lach, and their connection to the Mothman, only adds another other-worldly dimension to this story. If you like a great mystery with a lot of adventure and a little romance thrown in, you’ll love both of Mae Clair’s books in the Point Pleasant series. Looking forward to the third book, coming soon!

Reviewers #RRBC

write-a-review

As an author, there is nothing more encouraging than receiving a rave review for one of your books.

But, reviewers must maintain credibility. And that is my topic today.

I am an avid reader. I love nothing more than to sink my teeth into a good story. And, I never hesitate to leave a review once I finish.

However, what happens when a reader picks up a book that leaves him lacking? Does that reviewer leave a false review to make the author feel better or tell the truth?

reviewer-mistakes-945x801.png

I think the answer to that should be crystal clear. First of all, you are doing that author no favors by saying the book is better than it was. An honest but KIND review can help the author grow and get better at his craft.

We never stretch or reach for more, when we think we already have it.

So, I call to ALL reviewers – authors and readers – to stay true to yourself when it comes to writing reviews. If there are 20 five star reviews on Amazon for the book and you only feel like it deserves four stars, give it four stars!

If you stay true to yourself, then you build credibility as an honest reviewer. That being said, the word KIND must stay in your vocabulary. You only want to offer constructive not destructive criticism.

Read away! Review away! Be honest!

SPOTLIGHT AUTHOR, Rhani D’Chae #RRBC

I have met some of the most amazing and resilient authors through the RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB, and Rhani D’Chae tops the list. I’ll use some of her own words to explain, but will also throw in some of my own.

Firstly, Shadow of the Drillwritten by Rhani D’Chae landed at #3 on my TOP TEN Best Books list for 2016. The characters in this story captured me and even though it’s been months since I read the book, I still think about Decker and Charlene. 🙂 That’s the sign of a great story! You can read my review here.

Shadow of the Drill

As a member of the RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB, you are required to read and review a minimum of 4 books per year written by other members. For a lover of books, that is not any chore. But, that is how I discovered this story (which, by the way, is not my normal genre).

But, enough about me. Let me tell you a little bit about Rhani and why I say she is resilient.

“I was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, and for my vision, it was all downhill from there . My 20-40 vision went into the triple digits, and then started fading altogether. Later on, I developed glaucoma and ischermia, neither of which I found amusing. Two months ago I learned that I now have macular degeneration. Fortunately, the shots that I’m already getting in my eyes are the same ones used to treat md, so at least I’m not having to deal with more shots.

My vision loss has really changed the actual act of writing for me. When I write, I sit on my couch with my laptop on the coffee table in front of me. When I am seated in the “proper” position to type, I’m too far from the screen to read what I’m writing or to see if there are any mistakes. So I lean forward until my chin is over the outside edge of the laptop, at archaic point I can read what’s on the screen, provided the font is large and bold. But typing in that positioning is hard to do and impossible to do quickly. So I prop my chin on my left hand and do the hunt and peck thing with my right. So much for 60 words per minute.”

Can you imagine? What a challenge Rhani faces and yet she continues to write. She is working on a sequel to Shadow of the Drill as we speak, which I am thrilled to hear. AND, she has also written another short story, which I read as well, A Perilous Thirst.  Check out my review here.

pt  A short story about a gay vampire in the early days of the AIDS epidemic.

I simply want to honor Rhani D’Chae today for her strong spirit, determination and attitude. You’ll never find a negative post from Rhani on social media and until she tells you, you’d never know that she deals with blindness and relies largely on Dragon Speaks to write her posts. She is a personal inspiration to me.

So, THANK YOU, Rhani for embodying what every human spirit should!

If you’d like to follow Rhani on her SPOTLIGHT AUTHOR blog tour at  the RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB, please do. Each post is entertaining and delightful!

PAY-IT-FORWARD DAY #RRBC

Today is a day set aside to stop all self-promotion and give the spotlight to another author. I choose to support Author, John Howell.

He is the author of the John Cannon thriller trilogy, My GRL, His Revenge and Our Justice.

John Cannon is an attorney who takes a leave of absence from the firm to simply buy a boat and relax on the water. Little did he know he’d find himself in the thick of a terrorist plot. These books are hard to put down once you start reading one and have garnered many 5 star reviews on Amazon.

I invite you to take a look at these stories. You won’t be disappointed!

Author John Howell is a member of the RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB, which is where I made his acquaintance. He is supportive of other authors and always keeps a good sense of humor. He is the host of more than one RAVE WAVES Blog Talk Radio show and lives on the beautiful Gulf Coast in Texas.
