#RRBC Pay-It-Forward Week!

Today, I am supporting RRBC author, Lily Iona Mackenzie.

WOW! What a varied and bold life she has lived. I won’t go into a lot of detail because I want to get to her amazing books, but here’s an excerpt from the bio on her website.

A high school dropout, and a mother at 17, in her early years, Lily supported herself as a stock girl in the Hudson’s Bay Company, as a long distance operator for the former Alberta Government Telephones, and as a secretary (Bechtel Corp sponsored her into the States). She also was a cocktail waitress at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco; briefly broke into the male-dominated world of the docks as a longshoreman (she was the first woman to work on the SF docks and almost got her legs broken); founded and managed a homeless shelter in Marin County; co-created THE STORY SHOPPE, a weekly radio program for children that aired on KTIM in Marin; and eventually earned two Master’s degrees (one in Creative writing and one in the Humanities).

And now, for the books!

fling_frontcover_low_4-13-15-copy  When ninety-year-old Bubbles receives a letter from Mexico City asking her to pick up her mother’s ashes, lost there seventy years earlier and only now surfacing, she hatches a plan. A woman with a mission, Bubbles convinces her hippie daughter Feather to accompany her on the quest. Both women have recently shed husbands and have a secondary agenda: they’d like a little action. And they get it.

Alternating narratives weave together Feather and Bubbles’ odyssey. The two women head south from Canada to Mexico where Bubbles’ long-dead mother, grandmother, and grandfather turn up, enlivening the narrative with their hilarious antics.

In Mexico, where reality and magic co-exist, Feather gets a new sense of her mother, and Bubbles’ quest for her mother’s ashes-and a new man-increases her zest for life. Unlike most women her age, fun-loving Bubbles takes risks, believing she’s immortal. She doesn’t hold back in any way, eating heartily and lusting after strangers, exulting in her youthful spirit.

Has Bubbles discovered a fountain of youth that everyone can drink from?

all_this_mackenzie  All This is wonderful collection of poems. Indicative of the title, the poems range from the conventional lyric/narrative that captures an intense moment of emotion, an epiphany glimpsed briefly out of the corner of the eye, to the more experimental. Some of the poetry use intertextuality, language from other works, to explore meaning, perception, and layers of experience. Other poems play with language, letting it lead into unexpected places, exploring new terrain. In a few, placement on the page conveys the feel of musical notation and phrasing, the page a theatre where the interaction of language makes meaning rather than recreates a remembered event. At times, words in a poem are treated as paint and the sheet of paper as an expressionistic canvas. A book of poetry to keep close by you at all times.

Vietnam. A USMC A-4 Skyhawk pilot. PTSD. He survived Vietnam, but would he survive its aftermath? The experiences of combat produce different memories by those whom have served. Some return as warriors, seemingly unscathed. With others, their life is never the same. The horrors of each mission come back to haunt them for years. Ten years after returning from Vietnam as a two time decorated A-4 Skyhawk pilot, Captain Robert “Gene” Lathrop described war as hell. Flying the scooter as a part of VMA-311, he completed over 275 missions. His squadron completed 54,625 sorties dropping over 9 million tons of bombs. That record will never be broken. But the bomb damage assessment was steep for Captain Lathrop. The nightmares and emotional rage he experienced threatened to tear apart his family. To keep from unraveling, he sought a voice in the written word. This memoir serves as part of his mission to honor the men and women of the military. He believed veterans who return to peacetime should never feel eternally at war.

Thanks so much,  Jeanette Vaughan and Captain Robert “Gene” Lathrop, RIP

Just what is the Rave Reviews Book Club anyway?

The word that comes to mind immediately is Community.

Here is the definition of Community, according to Webster:

com·mu·ni·ty
kəˈmyo͞onədē/
noun
  1. 1.
a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
    “Rhode Island’s Japanese community”
  2. 2.
a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
“the sense of community that organized religion can provide”

So, based on the official definition, I would say that the Rave Reviews Book Club is a  Community of authors and readers, sharing fellowship and common attitudes, interest and goals.

Having been a member of the Rave Reviews Book Club for two years, I can openly and honestly state that the members of this club adhere to the idea of supporting, uplifting and promoting each other.

Rise by lifting others

If you are of the mindset that being an author and selling your books is a competition, then the Rave Reviews Book Club is definitely not a good fit for you. If you understand the simple truth, that in supporting others, you are supported, then please, by all means, take a close look at this community.

What #RRBC has done for me

book-club-badge-suggestion-copy

Rave Reviews Book Club is a community of writers and readers like nothing that can be found anywhere else in the world. I love the ideology behind the book club – Promoting and propelling each other to great heights. Founder of the club, Nonnie Jules, once quoted this: “You are only successful as an author when you are lifting someone else higher than yourself.” That really struck a chord with me because I love supporting others. This is not a competition. If I support another author, that does not mean I am losing sales of my own work. In fact, quite the contrary. When I support others, my own sales ranking goes up. Amazing, huh?
I recently had a book chosen by the club as the Book of the Month for July 2016. I could not have been more honored and humbled. The amount of support that book, “Home At Last,” received was astounding. Did it shoot to the top of the Amazon rankings as a best seller? No, it didn’t, but I saw a spike in sales, not only for “Home At Last,” but for my other three books in the series. That is testimony as to what the power of supporting each other can do.
My hat is off to this organization and what it stands for. I am loving being a part of this tight-knit family and honored to be supported by them.
You get out of it what you put into it. That is not only the way RRBC works, but is a law of physics. I am looking forward to sharing my new work with these amazing members, and sharing their work with others!

If you are an author and looking for a place to be supported, get your work read and reviewed, learn new writing skills, and support others, the Rave Reviews Book Club might be just what you need.

If you go, tell ’em I sent you!

Terrorists, Heroes, Romance #RRBC

HIS REVENGE

BY JOHN HOWELL

His Revenge1

Thrillers aren’t normally my favorite read, but His Revenge by John Howell sucked me in by the end of the first chapter!

John Cannon is a somewhat naïve successful business attorney who finds himself in the thick of a terrorist plot to destroy the American economy, embarrass the president and send the world into a tailspin.

At the beginning of the story, John barely escapes death in a horrible explosion that claims the life of his ally, Jason. But, because their efforts saved thousands of lives, John is now considered a national hero. Although saddened by the fact that Jason didn’t make it, he begins a slow recuperation. The blast has left him temporarily blind and paralyzed. The local police chief, Ned Tranes, takes personal responsibility for looking after John until the FBI and Secret Service arrive on the scene. But, as it turns out, there is no time for mending.

A meeting with the president is arranged and John is to receive a medal of honor for his bravery. After a side-trip to New York to pick up Jason’s sister, Stephanie, they proceed with FBI protection to a memorial service for Jason. He is stunned when a bullet intended for him hits her instead.

The action continues but culminates when John is drugged and taken prisoner by the terrorist group known as Desert Wolves. The plan is to use John to make an international broadcast in which he speaks lies about the American government and their involvement in oil control from the Middle East. These lies will send the country into chaos and the economy into a nose dive.

Not only are the terrorists forcing John to make the broadcast, but are also threatening to kill Stephanie and approximately 2,000 other people at Bethesda Naval hospital where she is recovering from the gunshot wound.

As events unfold and suspense builds, there doesn’t seem to be any viable means for John to escape from this deadly situation without thousands of people losing their lives.

If you like a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat with a splash of romance thrown in, you’ll enjoy His Revenge.

So hot it sizzles! #RRBC Harmony Kent

This is my first venture into the world of erotica. I have to say that Harmony Kent did a good job with writing in such a way that I was intrigued and somewhat turned on as I read the different sizzling sex scenarios laid out in the 10 shorts compiled in Interludes

Interludes

She covered everything from the hot 20 something year old man going for the middle aged woman with a handicap and sex so hot it sizzled off the page, to a historical interlude where syphilis took its toll.

I have to say the scenario with the alien was the one I enjoyed the most and I could see Harmony stretching into the future and another galactic planet to include superior medical capabilities as well as the communication between human and alien. All in all, she did a good job. Great imagination!

BOOK TITLES

The book title must grab my interest in just a few words. I personally do not like titles that are so long I feel as if I have read the book.

  • I want my curiosity to be peaked.
  • It should make me want to pick up the book and read the back cover.
  • Then I open it and randomly read a few paragraphs as I flip through the pages.

Here are sample of titles that are intriguing and eye-catching:

                 Desiree

                Love Story

                Jaws

                Moby Dick

                To Kill A Mockingbird

                Gone With the Wind

                Gift From The Sea

And, I did buy and enjoyed every one of them. My favorite is Desiree.

Certainly longer titles have worked for many successful authors:

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court

Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure

Alexander and the Wonderful, Marvelous, Excellent,

                 Terrific Days.

Under the Greenwood Tree or The Mellstock Quire

Often it is the non-fiction books that have the longer titles. My book is a perfect example: Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir. Just having “Outshine” did not seem enough. Just “Ovarian Cancer” sounded too boring. So, it became Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir.

Here are some thoughts to consider:

  1. Does the title give at least a strong hint as to what or who the book is about?
  2. Is a character or sentence from the book a clever title?
  3. Is my title original? Google to see if other books have the same title.
  4. Have two or three ideas and then ask friends, family, or members of a book club for feedback.

If the title is intriguing or informative enough for the potential reader to pick it up, then it is the right title. The most important part of selecting a title is that it is meaningful to you. You must be proud of the title and feel good standing behind it.

Suspenseful Violence -Graphic Sex #RRBC

BOOK REVIEW OF SHADOW OF THE DRILL

BY RHANI D’CHAE

Rhani D'Chae

I downloaded this book by Indie Author, Rhani D’Chae through a book club I belong to, Rave Reviews Book Club.

I’ll start by saying this is not my “normal” read. I started the book a month ago and put it down after the first three chapters. Then, I read a post by fellow #RRBC book club member, Gordon Bickerstaff, about stepping outside your comfort zone and reading something you normally wouldn’t. He is right and this is truly what the book club is all about – well, that and reading and reviewing books by Indie Authors. And, boy have I read some good ones!!!

Back to Shadow of the Drill.

Shadow of the Drill

After reading Gordon’s post I went back to it. This time, I couldn’t put it down.

The characters are strong, multi-dimensional and totally devoted to each other. Decker, The Drill, is hardened, tough and ruthless. And he has a mission. To find the three men who raped the young girl he loved with all of his heart and put her into a mental coma from which she has never recovered. We learn through the story, that it was this incident that turned Decker into the man he is. Rudy, his partner, is lighthearted. He runs a strip club and he is every bit as tough as Decker. He just expresses it in a different way. Then there is Charlene. I truly bonded with this tougher-than-nails woman. And yet, through her rough exterior, we get a glimpse of the warm loving and devoted woman she is. She loves both Decker and Rudy fiercely and will do anything to keep them close.

As Decker and Rudy catch up with the three men, after fifteen long years, all of their fury is unleashed. But, not without serious injuries to each of them. The mental picture of Decker performing surgery on Rudy to remove a bullet in his and Charlene’s kitchen is one that is forever branded in my mind. I won’t spoil the ending for the readers. I’ll just say that this story is an emotional roller coaster with tons of graphic sex and violence.

If you like this high level of suspense and deeply connected characters, you’ll love Shadow of the Drill.

Why #FREE doesn’t work anymore

Oh Yet Its Free

I recently touted another author’s books here on my blog and offered one for free to a lucky person who left a comment. The only person who commented was the author who I hosted.

Now, it wasn’t because these aren’t good stories. They are! I’ve read them all. And, they were written by a NY Times and USA Today Bestselling author. So, why did no one have any interest in a free book?

I pondered on that and here’s what I came up with about why FREE doesn’t work anymore.

  1. Every author is more than willing to give away a free book in hopes of a review.
  2. Most everyone who loves to read has a To-Be-Read list a mile long (I know I do)
  3. What good does it do to download another free book in a genre you don’t normally read, when you already have ten in your favorite genre waiting for your attention?
  4. There are thousands upon thousands of free books on Amazon.
  5. Let’s face it. We are bombarded from every direction and have developed a certain numbness to it all.

So, I thought about what does work, and here’s an example. I belong to a book club called the Rave Reviews Book Club and they have regular Blog Talk Radio interviews with Indie Authors. This morning, I had a chance to listen in to one author’s interview and it was so intriguing, that I turned off the radio show and downloaded her book, My Wounded Soldier by Diane Munier.

rrbc coverMy Wounded Soldier

Now, I ask myself, “When are you going to have time to read this one?”

Good question. Between working thirty hours per week, writing my own stories, this blog, a blog for the Texas Musicians Museum, Proofreading for the Tx Assoc of Authors, submitting articles to two different music magazines, supporting my fellow #RRBC members and squeezing in time for some live music and playing with the grandkids, I don’t know the answer. All I know is that the story was so compelling I had to get it and it WILL move to the top of my TBR list. Sorry, everyone else who has to wait longer for a review from me.

I’d love to hear your own theories about why #FREE isn’t an effective marketing tool anymore. Or, why you think it is.
