A Second Excerpt from “The Button.”

It’s the end of chapter one. Lynn has been partying all night. She stepped outside for a smoke before having “just one more drink” before heading home. All alone after a quick conversation with the cute bartender she hears a voice in the dark:

“Go.”

“What?” Lynn looked around, but there was no one there. Alone and hearing voices—awesome!

“Leave.”

“Hey, who’s there?” She peered into the darkness. No one answered. Her arms were covered with goosebumps. That voice reminded her of something, but what?

Unnerved, she hurried back into the bar and ordered another drink. She wanted to put that warning voice out of her mind. It kind of reminded her of high school, for some reason, but why?

“Here’s your drink, miss,” said the sour, gray-haired guy—Gus, according to his name tag. Didn’t Kent say that Patty was replacing him? This didn’t look like a Patty.

“Thanks.”

“You paying? It’s a dollar fifty.” Gus gave her an eyeroll that made him look like he was going to pass out. His girth was that of a man who liked to eat, but he had the smooth hands of a man who didn’t like to do hard work. He didn’t strike her as a man who’d serve drinks, more like someone who drank a lot of them.

“I am,” she replied, ignoring the tone. “Keep the change.”

“Yeah, I will. I might be able to put my kids through college, now—gee, thanks.”

Wow, what a jerk, she thought, now wishing that she could get her fifty cents back. She sipped her watered-down drink, listening to the band butcher “Edge of Seventeen.” Boy, did that seem like a long time ago to Lynn, now that she was on the edge of twenty-one. The warnings to leave were forgotten as she finished her drink. Stacy made eye contact and gave a thumbs-up. Lynn knew that meant she was staying with Dapper Dave. Lynn’s thumb went up in response. It was time to go. She stood to leave but quickly sank back onto the red stool as the room began to spin. She felt an arm go around her, holding her up. She tried to see who it was, but her head wasn’t cooperating.

That was the last thing she remembered until she collapsed, naked, into bed at two in the morning. She groaned as she reached for her alarm clock. She couldn’t be late for work again, or she’d get written up. As she pushed the button to engage the alarm, she noticed it was set for 8:40. No, that wasn’t right. She moved the arm back to seven. There.

“Hey!” Something touched her legs.

Had Stacy’s cat, Princess Leia, jumped on her bed? She never left Stacy’s room at night. Strange. There it was again. Lynn loved cats, but this little striped one was so spoiled—what a pest. The room began spinning again. The cocaine wasn’t doing its job. She passed out the moment her head hit an unfamiliar satin pillow.

The Outlaw Mail Order Bride Series @LBroday

Linda Broday has released the first book in her new series!

The Outlaw’s Mail Order Bride released January 29 and readers are loving it! I’ll let Linda tell you about it in her own words.

Three Fun Facts About The Outlaw’s Mail Order Bride

By Linda Broday

I’m so excited about this new release and launch of a new four-book series called Outlaw Mail Order Brides. I’ve always wanted to write stories about outlaws. I believe there were good ones (those who killed because they had little choice) and bad ones (who killed for sport and because they liked it.) There’s a clear difference.

The American Frontier was comprised with millions upon millions of acres of land with only a few hundred lawmen to keep order which led to men finding what justice they could for themselves. The result was usually who had the fastest gun.

The lines were often blurred between lawmen and outlaws with men switching back and forth to suit the situation. There are plenty of examples in history such as Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Pat Garrett, to name a few who were both. It just depended on the job that needed doing.

That’s where Clay Colby and this town of outlaws find themselves. They’ve killed but always because they had little choice except now they want to marry and settle down, raise a family. To do that, they needed wives so Clay begins writing Tally Shannon, a woman who escaped a lunatic asylum after her stepmother put her in there to get rid of her.

This series is a bleed-over from my Men of Legend with the Legend brothers making guest appearances. Luke Legenc gets the most time since he starts a private bride service for men and women living in the shadows. They send him their letters and he hand-delivers them.

Here are some fun facts about this story:

1. Tattoo removal is possible. It’s thought to have begun in ancient Egypt when slaves either bought their freedom or were given it. Medicine men developed a way to remove their tattoo with chemicals. It’s not without pain though and it did leave a scar. The smaller ones worked best. Tally Shannon has a small diamond-shaped tattoo on her cheek, put there to identify her as a patient in the Creedmore Lunatic Asylum, and the town doctor is successful at removing it. She’ll do anything to reclaim herself. No one owns her.

2. Prior to World War II, there was little oversight of mental asylums and families with money could pay to have them take a member that was unruly, uncooperative, or just plain too much trouble. Here are a few actual reasons for admission from 1864 to 1889: Immoral Life, Laziness, Deranged Masturbation, Novel Reading, Bad Habits and Political Excitement, Greediness, Business Nerves. Anything could be used for an excuse. Tally’s stepmother claimed that she preyed upon children and handed the supervisor a bag of money, telling him to make Tally’s life a living hell. That’s exactly what he did.

3. Children were also put in the asylum and one was a little blind girl named Violet. When she arrives unexpectedly with Tally, Clay is shocked at first then deeply touched and starts teaching her how to get around without help. He and the men rig up walking trails with ropes that take her from one part of town to the other. He had also once seen a blind man walking with a long piece of wood in front of him, tapping for obstructions in his path so Clay makes Violet one and teaches her how to use it. The girl finds a measure of independence which sometimes leads to trouble. He just wants her to have a good life and he loves her as though she was his own child. She becomes the darling of the town with everyone watching out for her safety.

Author, Linda Broday

I’m a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty historical western romance books and short stories. I’m a Texas girl through and through and reside in the panhandle on ancient land that carries the voices of those who lived and died on the wind. If I close my eyes and get still I can often hear them whispering in my ear.

My love of history and the Old West was born from watching TV westerns and visiting museums and libraries. I’ve always been an avid reader and books opened up entirely new exciting worlds that seemed limited only by my imagination.

Cowboys have always fascinated me so it’s no wonder that I love to write about them, their ladies, and the struggles they endure in trying to carve out a small place to call home. Western romance is my passion and I feel truly blessed. Humble roots and the love of family have become focal points in my stories. I sincerely hope readers enjoy what I strive to bring to life on the printed page.

I’m a mother, grandmother, and now a great grandmother. In my family, I’m the storyteller and the one who records our history. I come from a long line of poor but prideful people. That’s okay. I’m happy with that. This is my legacy.

August Reflection

I purposefully left the “Hemingway” post up an extra few days and didn’t post again on Wednesday.  I want to thank everyone who visited the blog, left comments, liked and shared.

I am going to give away a copy of the book and album to someone who leaves a comment on this post today. And, if you missed it the first time around, here is an Amazon Purchase Link: Hemingway

REFLECTION

August is such a big month for me each year. It is not only the month Rick and I both had birthdays, but also the month he returned home from prison after fifteen years AND the month we got married.

So, I want to share a couple of short excerpts from “Home At Last.”

CHAPTER 2:

The air brakes brought the lumbering bus to a stop and the door flew open. Luke stood and gathered his meager belongings, consisting of a cheap cardboard case with a change of underwear, one change of clothes, a comb, toothbrush and shaving razor he’d been issued when he left prison. In his pocket, he carried his parole papers, which he’d glanced at often since leaving Kansas.

When he spotted Darlina at the entrance of bus station, he swallowed hard.

He maneuvered his lanky frame to the front of the bus and stepped off. He dropped his case and wrapped his arms tightly around her when she ran forward. They stood quietly, barely breathing.

His chest tightened when he saw big tears welling up in her blue eyes. He hated to see her cry, even if they were tears of joy.

“Oh Luke. You’re finally home,” her voice quivered.

CHAPTER 3:

Lily and Nicole bounded out of the front door before the car came to a complete stop.

The minute Luke opened the car door, they both flew at him. “Daddy, Daddy!” Nicole yelled.

“Let me get out of the car, girls, then I can give you both a big hug.”

Darlina watched, misty-eyed, as the girls grabbed Luke’s hands and pulled him toward the house. Luke glanced back over his shoulder at her. “Come on, Mama. Let’s join the party.”

She smiled and caught up with them.

The entire family had gathered to welcome Luke home and Mom Stone had prepared a feast including homemade chocolate pie.

Tears and laughter filled the air with joyous celebration.

When Mom Stone hugged her son, she sobbed into his shoulder. “Bubba, I didn’t think you’d ever get home.”

“Don’t cry, Mom. I’m here now and I’m not going anywhere else.” He reached for Darlina who wrapped her arms around them both.

Luke’s eyes misted when he hugged his only brother, which in turn brought a lump to Darlina’s throat. Because of cancer, Bobby no longer had any vocal chords and after suffering a stroke, he walked with a cane and dragged his left leg.

Voice hoarse with emotion, Luke hugged Bobby a second time. “It’s damn sure good to be home, stud.”

CHAPTER 4

In the chaos of everyone talking and laughing, Darlina linked her arm through Luke’s. “We did it, baby. We finally did it. Are you happy?”

Luke gave her a positively sinful grin that made her heart lurch. “Darlin’, I’ll show you how much a bit later. Bet I can get you out of that beautiful dress in nothin’ flat.”

Darlina laughed. “Promises promises”

It was a very big day in the lives of Luke and Darlina Stone. One that would never be forgotten.

A union created in heaven and sealed on earth.

The Contract by John Howell & Gwen Plano #RRBC #RWISA

It is such an honor to tell you about this new book co-written by fellow RRBC and RWISA members, John Howell and Gwen Plano! Pick up a copy today. I promise you will enjoy it.

The CONTRACT between heaven and earth

By John W. Howell & Gwen M. Plano

Thank you, Jan, for inviting us to join you today. We are honored and grateful to be featured on your blog where you have such good writing and music.

The Contract

Available on Kindle and Paperback

Kindle priced at $0.99 for the introduction.

The CONTRACT is a different story for writers John W. Howell and Gwen M. Plano. For either of them, it is their first attempt at co-authorship. After a year of Hurricane Harvey and other challenges, they have created, what they have termed, an inspirational thriller that bridges heaven and earth.

Here is the blurb:

The earth is threatened with a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. The chosen two sign a contract that they will work to avert the disaster.

Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien, a teacher, become heaven’s representatives on earth. The story follows them as they individually and then together face overwhelming obstacles and eventually end up on a strategic Air Force base in California. It is there that they discover a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. The terrorists have a plan for global dominance, and they are determined to complete their mission. Although military leadership appears to have the President’s best interests at heart, it is not clear who can be trusted and who should be feared. The action is rough and tumble as Brad and Sarah try to figure out the culprits for the plot that will turn into a worldwide conflagration unless stopped.

If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires.

Trailer

Here is an excerpt.

When they stepped out into the brisk air, Brad wrapped his arm around Sarah and pulled her close. “Will you be warm enough? I have a jacket in the car.”

Sarah didn’t know how to respond. With his arm around her, she felt warm—in fact, a bit more than just warm. Maybe I should accept his jacket, but I don’t want to wear it and give up his arm.

“Sarah?”

“I just thought that it had been a while since a gentleman had his arm around me.” I can’t believe I just said that.

Brad turned to face her, his hands now around her waist, “I hope you like being held close.”

Sarah nodded, her eyes welling. Brad leaned and offered a first kiss. Sarah felt fifteen again, swept off her feet by prince charming.

“If I keep my arm around you, will you be warm enough?”

Sarah beamed. He had reframed his question, and she nodded yes.

Brad smiled. “I thought so.”

Under a street lamp busy with swarming intruders, Brad drew Sarah close, and with tenderness, kissed her. When she relaxed into his arms, Brad took a deep breath in, and his eyes shone wetly as he exhaled. Was he falling in love with her too? It seemed that neither of them wanted the moment to end. Sarah savored Brad’s warmth and strength. It felt so right, so natural, as though he and she had been lovers in times past. This is where I belong, she thought, in his arms.

Legacy of Danger #RRBC

It is my pleasure to host #RRBC author, Patricia Guthrie on this stop of her 4 Wills Publishing blog tour to introduce us to her newest book, Legacy of Danger!

(Please note: The writing piece below is the sole work of author, Patricia Guthrie.)

What I Want to Write About

A Short rest from Legacy. Here’s what I want to write about. Seriously?

I really need to get back into the discipline of writing again. Honestly, I do. So, do I really want to write? What about? Do I want to concentrate on a new novel? (what a novel idea—no pun intended) How about getting into short stories? Non-fiction articles?  It’s funny. (not ha ha) every time I work on “Legacy of Danger”(since the 1990’s)  I get overly annoyed with my writing and plotting and work on something else. “In the Arms of the Enemy” and “Waterlilies Over My Grave” (both published) were the two recipients of my frustration.

If I do write this story, what to write about? A story about horses and horsemen—a subject I know something about?  How about music, maybe an opera singer?  How about setting my character as a would-be writer? Subject matter is important. What about a church as a setting? (lots of mysteries set in churches—remember Father Brown?) How about a barn? A ranch? The mountains?  Where do our readers enjoy vacationing? Should it be a romance or a mystery? Romantic suspense? Paranormal?  Do you see a pattern of wavering unsureness here?

Maybe I should take one of the published books and continue their story with a series.  An amateur writer-detective who lives on a horse farm and solves community crimes in churches.  I love amateur detectives. After all, I grew up on Miss Marple.

Should I just start writing? (panzer) Or should I do what I advocate for other authors to do. Make up character sketches, scene descriptions, and work on a goal, motivation and conflict-resolution. If I don’t and just panzer (write off the cuff) it can get sticky. At least for me. Green eyes turn blue in chapter 20. An avid lover of Shakespeare turns into a book hating TV watcher by mid novel.  (nothing against TV. I’m a Criminal Minds junkie.)

A murder mystery needs a good, suspenseful plot.  Our mm (murder mystery) needs a dicey  detective (generally with issues of his or her own,) perhaps a venomous victim and surly suspect. Should the victim be a nasty human being like we see in so many crime novels? Maybe not. Some of the most heinous of criminals love their mothers.  One of the saddest mysteries occurs when a nice man or woman kills a nasty individual, then either commits suicide when near capture, or is caught. Sometimes we root for the killer.

Maybe it’s time I got out of the romance-romantic suspense genre and went straight mystery.  A good ol’fashioned “who dun it.”  Yep, I’m thinking in that direction.  I’m thinking love of horses, a protagonist–a woman who I wish I could be like, a criminal who I’ve probably met, but with whom I hope I never have to interact, two teenagers and a hero who are not quite on top of the protagonist pool, but someone I wish I could meet–and marry at the end. It’s my story. I can meet and manipulate anyone I want.

This may be just a muse. A pending brain storming session from me to me and anyone who will listen. But, it’s also the beginnings of an idea. Maybe my next novel.

One thing I do know. I need to focus on one genre. Going back and forth isn’t getting me anywhere. But, that’s me. I’m writing this because I want to entice you to focus, too. If we go in too many directions, we get lost in the forest of ideas. Find that one gorgeous oak tree and make it beautiful.

Or lay up against it, look at the sky and contemplate glorious plots.

That’s all for today.

Courage

May you find the courage to follow your dreams.A New YearA Clean Slate

I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. To me, they are only rules you make for yourself that you end up breaking, then feel bad because you weren’t able to stick with it.

Instead, I choose a word at the beginning of each year that is my theme or go-to for the year. For instance, last year, my word was “Believe.” Looking back over the year, it was amazing how many times that word got tested and/or validated. Here’s a synchronicity that pretty much blew my mind. Shortly after the beginning of 2017, I was at my daughter’s house and she said, “Mom, I got a Young Living order in and they sent me a free bottle of oil. Do you want it?”

She handed it to me and I had to smile. The name of the oil blend was – yep, you guessed it – “Believe.”

Believe

So, for the entire year of 2017, I put a drop of “Believe” on the bottom of my feet every morning.

I said all of that to say my word for 2018 is “Courage.”

I am attempting to find a publisher for a new series I am writing. I need Courage to pursue that and not give up. I need Courage to spread my writing wings, to write in a genre I’ve never attempted, Courage to try new things I’ve never before tried, Courage to step into my own personal power.

My power animal is the Puma or Cougar and they are the symbol of Courage or Bravery.

I have a feeling I will be calling on my power animal a lot through 2018.

I’d like to share with you the blurb I wrote for my new book, which is Book 1 of the White Rune Series – When Two Worlds Collide.

Caught between a strong mind and fragile heart, Rena Jett vows never to let anyone in. The horrific abuse she suffered as a child has left permanent scars. Jag Peters doesn’t realize anything is missing from his near perfect life until he almost collides with Rena on her candy apple red Harley.

Rena’s brother, protector and only friend, Sam Jett, died in Afghanistan. A final letter from Sam delivers a mysterious White Rune to her. Jag is able to see and communicate with Sam’s ghost creating a triangle of souls. And when life-threatening danger comes to call, the two join forces to save Rena.

Could it be possible for two worlds so completely opposite to find a common ground and perhaps even love or a happily-ever-after?

What do you think? Does this pique your interest and make you want to know more? Give me only honest opinions, please. 🙂

Of course, I hope to attract a publisher who is willing to take a gamble on me. In the meantime, I am working on the second book in the series where the White Rune gets passed to a soldier desperately in need of his own happily-ever-after.

AUTHOR Q&A

  1. What made you think of the title Ninja School Mum?

I was thinking about the skills parents have, like negotiation, crisis management, planning, strategy and thought they sounded similar to something a ninja might have to do! All parents are able to multi-task and are under so much pressure. It was nice to turn the idea upside down and make the main character a harassed school mum with some unusual skills.

  1. Do you think someone can be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

Yes. I read something recently about a writer who thought of her writing as a job. She was successful, but her writing didn’t make her feel inspired. She knew what sold for her readers and followed a format. That’s great if it works for her, but for me, I have a love of writing and it fills me with joy to complete a new manuscript. If readers enjoy the story, it’s a wonderful added bonus.

  1. Do you try to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I enjoy being original but also hope I’m making my readers happy from reading the stories I write.

  1. Does a big ego hurt or help authors?

I don’t know any authors with big egos. Writing can be quite an insecure job, but even if you are very successful, bragging about it benefits no one. The writers I know are wonderful people. They are warm and supportive and don’t shout it from the rooftops when they do well, they just enjoy the moment.

TO BE RELEASED NOVEMBER 7TH!

Leave a comment on the author’s blog for a chance to win a copy.

TO MARRY A TEXAS OUTLAW

I read this book chapter by chapter when my sister was writing it and I couldn’t wait to sit down and read it all the way through. Luke Weston was my favorite of the Legend brothers from the beginning of this series. I’ve always had a soft spot for the outlaws. 🙂

My heart aches as Luke searches for freedom – freedom from constantly looking over his shoulder, wearing a target on his back, and freedom to claim the Legend name and everything it stands for.

When Josie Morgan interrupts his search, he gets more than he bargains for. You’ll find lots of adventure, romance, surprises, heartache and gunfights in this last book of the MEN OF LEGEND series.

So, hop on over to Linda Broday’s blog and leave a comment to win a copy, OR pre-order from Amazon and get ready to hold on for a wild sexy ride with the outlaw, Luke Weston (Legend.)

For this blog, I want to revisit my review of a book by Michelle I read last year, JEM.

jem

on September 12, 2016
The scars of abuse run deep from childhood into adulthood. Jem has those deep scars that he struggles to hide behind fierce anger, violence, and brute strength. Never again would he take any abuse from anyone.
He’s had one true friend in life, Devon, whom he called ‘Angel’. She held him and comforted him when he cried or was afraid. She was four years his senior and to a four-year-old who knew nothing but abuse, she was truly that angel.
When he was fourteen years old, he had a red-headed angel tattooed on his arm to always remember her by.
How could he know she would show up in the oceanside town where he lived? And what a disappointment that she didn’t recognize him? In fact, she seemed afraid of the violence she saw him administer. But, somehow he knew that his angel would eventually recognize and love him again.
This is a romance of the deepest kind – from childhood into adulthood. When Devon, Jem’s angel, shows up in the town where he lives, running from an abusive boyfriend, fate had to throw them together. Both are broken in their own ways and desperately need each other without knowing it.
I loved this story and couldn’t stop reading until I reached the end. I couldn’t wait to turn the next page to see what happened next. Of course, I knew they would eventually wind up together, sharing the same love they’d shared as children, but the plot twists along the way kept me reading. This is a great love story from Michelle Abbott and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a character-driven story.

5 star

Sweet Temptation

THE BLURB:

Evie Taylor is a career girl with no time for men, but she has a secret passion for Michael Marsh, the unattainable world-famous singer, The Diamond Superstar. Michael has been widowed for two years and the young detective who helped close the case on his wife’s murder still haunts his dreams. He doesn’t expect to find a deadly enemy in Evie’s mother.

Teenage Greta, jealous of her adored father paying attention to Evie, makes a dangerous contact in an Internet chatroom. The Spy, a journalist hell-bent on destroying Michael, sets out to prove he has an incestuous relationship with his eldest daughter, he encourages his adult twins to sleep together, and he is responsible for appalling injuries inflicted on Greta.

Can Evie defeat the virus intent on her death, The Spy, and her mother, to win the heart of the man who’s turned her life upside-down?

MY REVIEW:

I have read all the books in Sarah Stuart’s Royal Command Series, and until I read Sweet Temptation, my favorite of the series was the first book, Dangerous Liaisons.

Michael Marsh, the Diamond Superstar has millions of fans across the globe, but he’s lonely. When his wife, Lizzie, was murdered in front of him, his world shattered. He didn’t believe he could ever love again. That is until detective Evie Taylor, walked into his office. Thirty years his junior, it is a relationship destined to failure from the start. She’s been a fan and star struck by him since she was a teenager. So, when he asks her to move into Mere House with him, she’s ecstatic, but disillusioned when she is never invited to share his bed. She falls gravely ill and lies at death’s door in the hospital for months. That is when Michael realizes he cannot live without her. A hasty marriage in the hospital puts a diamond ring on her finger, but still she is riddled with doubt. How can Michael love her when she is so near death and disgustingly thin? The many skeletons in Michael Marsh’s closet come out and with the help of Evie’s evil and jealous mother, she is convinced the marriage is only a farce and meant to take the heat off Michael when The Spy reports damaging lies about incest and physical abuse in the tabloids. Add Michael’s teenage daughter, Greta, into the mix and the plot thickens. Greta allows herself to become a victim of a sex trafficking ring when she turns to a chat room to ease her own loneliness. She is jealous of Evie and the hours Michal spends at the hospital and convinces herself that her family doesn’t love her. The author did a superb job of getting inside the mind of a typical teenager. But, the danger is real and if not for Greta’s fierce determination, she would have been another statistic.

One of the reasons I loved this story so much is that Michael Marsh redeemed himself. By that I mean, that he had to, for once in his life, think of someone other than himself. The hours he spent with no food and no sleep to sit by Evie’s bedside as she battled to live and fight incessant nightmares put him in a different light. It showed a compassionate caring side of the Diamond Superstar that we had not seen in the other books.

If you love dysfunctional family drama, suspense, and conflict, you are going to love Sweet Temptation. Sarah Stuart did an amazing job with all the characters, delving deep into their psyche. As a last word, I also have to give her kudos for the detailed way she depicted Evie’s nightmares that haunted her as she lay in a coma. Only someone who had experienced these could write about them in such vivid detail.
