THE ALTERNATIVE COVER IN HIGH RESOLUTION BEST

BLURB:

The Alternative.

There are those that cling unreservedly to the lifeboat that believing in Karma hands them so willingly.

They work, they live, and they function in a world that allows them the option of unreservedly trusting that Karma has no deadline.

Until they are handed the spark that ignites them into becoming the instrument of Karma itself.

There are others who have had all they once held to be truths, everything they once stood for and took pride in, torn apart and ripped from them by the hand of a cruel fate.

Then, of course, there are those who believed in nothing and no one, to begin with …

These are their stories.

The stories of people both good and bad, who made the choice to exact “The Alternative.”

An excerpt from Chapter 1. Picasso.

February 1990.

The tall man stretched his arms and flexed his long artistic fingers. He stood back to gain a different perspective of his latest work of art. He’d spent a great deal of time sketching his outline and was well satisfied with the outcome. Perhaps this one would be the perfection he craved above all else.

His other efforts were upstairs in the gallery, and while they were far from his lofty imaginings, they each represented another step forward toward his ultimate goal. He knew this exhibition would prompt worldwide interest, that was a given. His reputation was on the line. That at least was something he valued.

He grunted and moved the newest piece into the workroom. The more difficult application of his talent needed to begin.

NEW YORK JULY 2015

Meredith keyed in her code, shouldered the door open and dropped her briefcase onto the polished boards of the entry. Working on autopilot, she flicked on the light and bent to collect the mail from the floor; throwing it onto the small bureau without bothering to check the sender. She shrugged off her coat and draped it over the arm of the sofa. Too damned weary to be bothered with any external interruptions tonight, she removed the home phone from its cradle and headed to the kitchen to fix enough coffee to sustain the long evening ahead, deliberately ignoring the well-stocked bar. She was well aware that she’d need every bit of concentration she could muster. She removed the Glock from her handbag, and out of habit, she placed it on the coffee table next to the perpetually full ashtray.

Her head was already pounding and she rubbed at her tense neck muscles until her fingers ached. Relief from the unresolved tension still hovered … just out of reach. She held her breath for a moment, stilling her impatience. If all went to plan, this thing would be finally ended. If justice existed at all, it would go well. All the years she’d worked to bring what was the only course left open to herself and the others to completion was coming. ‘Soon now’, was her daily mantra. But the darker visions still danced vividly in her mind’s eye and tormented her rare sleeping hours … it had been that way for almost twenty-five years.

The memory haunted her, dark and unforgivingly brutal. It replayed in clear and explicit detail every time she was forced to reflect on it … and its aftermath.

FALL

BOOK INFO:

In The Fall of Lilith, Vashti Quiroz-Vega crafts an irresistible new take on heaven and hell that boldly lays bare the passionate conflicted natures of God’s first creations: the resplendent celestial beings known as angels.

If you think you know their story, think again.

Endowed with every gift of mind, body, and spirit, the angels reside in a paradise bounded by divine laws, chief of which are obedience to God, and celibacy. In all other things, the angels possess free will, that they may add in their own unique ways to God’s unfolding plan.

Lilith, most exquisite of angels, finds the rules arbitrary and stifling. She yearns to follow no plan but her own: a plan that leads to the throne now occupied by God himself. With clever words and forbidden caresses, Lilith sows discontent among the angels. Soon the virus of rebellion has spread to the greatest of them all: Lucifer.

Now, as angel is pitted against angel, old loyalties are betrayed and friendships broken. Lust, envy, pride, and ambition arise to shake the foundations of heaven . . . and beyond. For what begins as a war in paradise invades God’s newest creation, a planet known as Earth. It is there, in the garden called Eden, that Lilith, Lucifer, and the other rebel angels will seek a final desperate victory—or a venomous revenge.

 “[A] compelling narrative that . . . strays far from traditional biblical text . . . A well-written, descriptive, and dark creation story.”—Kirkus Reviews

“I once wrote a story that killed a town.”

A Town’s Perception

by Vashti Quiroz-Vega

It began with the blood moon.

One evening I lifted my eyes to the firmament, and the moon appeared to have doubled in size. It was crimson in color and its reflection painted the skies cerise. Afterward, all manner of curious phenomena began to occur and nothing would ever be the same in my small town.

Strange swirls of iridescent colors began to form in the night skies. During the day the sun shone purplish-blue and colored the skies indigo. It was like something had transported us to a different planet overnight.

When I saw the ships in the sky, I knew it wouldn’t be long before they came for us, and I was right.

In the middle of the day, they came. I watched them disembark their ships, small groups at a time. They resembled men of diminutive stature with large heads. They appeared to waddle rather than walk. They wore weird metallic suits with respirators attached to their faces. They walked down the street and entered my neighbors’ homes. Screams and wails disrupted our normally quiet town.

I rushed to my daughter’s side. She sat on the bed in her room, stared ahead at nothingness and wailed, as she had done for days.

My poor child. Her mind was not equipped to handle this invasion. I held her tight. I would not allow her capture. Who knew what these small creatures were capable of doing to her––to us.

I pushed the barrel of the gun up against her temple to keep my hand from trembling. The feel of the cold metal against her flesh did not stop her wails. Poor thing, her voice was so hoarse. I would extinguish the fire in her gullet.

I pulled the trigger. She fell on her side, her eyes still open wide as if she still saw this nightmare. I shut her eyelids and finally gave her peace.

It was my turn. I’d convinced myself, like so many others in this town, that this was the only way out. I was the last to take action since I was taught to always have hope, but even those of us who always have hope had given up.

The priest took most of the townsfolk. After his last sermon, the priest instructed the congregation to get on their knees and pray. While they were praying, the priest left the church and locked them in. Then he set it ablaze.

Pitiful man of the cloth, his mind also handled the crisis in a bad way. He burned those people alive: men and women, young and old. He had invited my daughter and I to attend his last sermon, and I agreed to go, but my daughter was sick, so we stayed home and were saved from a horrific death.

I live a few blocks from the church, and I heard the screams and howls of the burning souls. I ran down the street and noticed there was no one sitting on their front porches, no children playing hopscotch, no dogs being walked. As I neared the church the screams grew louder. I met with a fiery inferno. The stench of burning flesh and hair made me retch. I released the contents of my stomach right there on the street. What did it matter? There was no one around to watch me. I saw the priest stagger from the back of the burning building. My stomach was tied in knots.

“Demons! The demons are upon us,” he shouted. “If you remain they will take your soul!”

“What are you talking about?” I backed away from him. “There are people burning alive in there!” I ran toward the church’s double doors. The heat of the blaze stopped me. I sobbed helplessly. Those were my neighbors. My friends.

“You have to burn! Otherwise, the demons will take your soul. I burned them because the fire will purify their spirits.” He wore a demented expression.

I froze and stared at him with wide eyes and raised brow. Then my hands flew to cover my mouth upon recognition of what he had done. My legs faltered and I fell to my knees. I trembled uncontrollably as the priest took steps toward me.

I held up my shaky hands before me. “Stop! Don’t come any closer!” I made an attempt to get to my feet, but my knees buckled.

“My dear, you must not remain alive. The demons will take your soul.” His voice was eerily calm. He continued to walk in my direction.

“You’re right!” I bobbed my head. “I know I must die. I must tend to my daughter’s demise also.”

“What? Your young daughter is still alive?”

“Yes, she waits for me at home.”

“No, no, no!” The man of the cloth pulled on his sleeves and shook his head like a madman. “You must go to her. It may be too late already. The demons do not waste time. A young soul like hers is a prime target. Go to her! If her soul is still intact, take her life and then take your own.”

He took a lighter out and flicked it on. He bent over and put the small flame against the hem of his cassock.

I tried to scream as I watched the little flame spread and grow on the flammable cloth of his priestly vestment, but I opened my mouth and sounds did not leave my lips. I gathered my strength and lifted myself off the ground. I wanted to run. Instead, I barely escaped the howling priest who floundered, engulfed in flames.

I staggered past him, noxious smoke attacking my nostrils. The stench was so great, I could taste it.

The very next day, the little men came.

It’s time now. My daughter is gone. The entire town is gone.

***

A gunshot is heard. Men in white lab coats and facemasks run into a young girl’s bedroom. On the twin bed, dressed in pink, lies a pre-teen girl and a thirty-something-year-old woman. Both females are deceased due to gunfire wounds to the head.

“We’re too late,” one of the men in lab coats said.

“Well, maybe it is for the best.” His partner nodded. “There is nothing we could have done to reverse the effects of the chemical agent.”

“It’s a shame what happened in this town.”

“Yes, but how could we know Solution K would have this effect on them?”

“No, we had no way of knowing that the solution we prepared to cause infertility in the men and women of this town would turn into a powerful, hallucinogenic, mind-altering drug when combined with their water.”

“We’ll have to look into the town’s filtering system before we try this again in the next small town.”

“I agree, but let’s not allow this small speed bump to deter our cause.”

“Doctors,” a young man interrupts, “you asked for bottled water?” Both men nodded and each took a bottle. The young assistant leaves.

“Of course it won’t deter us. Our cause to save the planet by ending overpopulation goes beyond a few casualties.”

“Well, I wouldn’t exactly call five hundred people a few casualties, but such things happen in the name of science.”

“Absolutely.” The scientist gulps down his bottled water. Suddenly, he sputters. His eyes widen. “Thi-this water was bottled right here in this town!”

The other scientist fumbles with the bottle, trying to see the manufacturer’s name.

“How could this small town have a bottled water company?” Openmouthed and hands trembling, the scientist stares at the lettering on the bottle. He reads, “‘We take pride in our fresh, clean mountain water and we use the highest quality water filtration systems.’ They bottled this water four days ago.” He drops the bottle and it crashes to the ground.

“No!” His partner clasped his hands over his head. “We put Solution K in the water supply seven days ago!”

“Maybe it won’t affect us in the same way as the townspeople.” His voice wavers as he stared at his partner while rubbing his neck. His body trembles at the thought of having ingested the solution that caused all the townspeople to go mad and kill themselves and each other.

The other scientist stared at him, unnervingly silent.

Suddenly, the first scientist recoils. “Stay away from me! Don’t come near me. You will never take me alive!”

“What is the matter with you?” The second scientist narrows his eyes and shrinks back. “Oh––no.” His face slackens as realization hits.

“You’ll never take me alive, Nazi!” His partner continues shouting, grabs a lamp and charges.

The scientist wrestles with his crazed partner and seizes the lamp from him. The madman bites him on the shoulder. The scientist beats his partner on the head and back repeatedly with the lamp until the madman finally unclenches his teeth and falls to the ground dead.

The scientist falls back against the wall and wraps his arms around himself. He slides down the wall, landing in a crumpled mess on the floor. He holds his head in his hands and stares at his partner’s limp body and cracked skull, whose blood meanders toward him. Rivers fall from his eyes. His body shakes and convulses.

His eyes do not reflect what lays before him but instead, he sees what his mind perceives.

The flames of hell surround him, while demons dance around and torment him with pain.

Moral of the story––Karma’s a bitch.

OUR JUSTICE by John Howell – Review #RRBC

51bypm1jgll-_uy250_         5 star

Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a ride!

In this third book of the John Canon series, Author John Howell has amped up the action. Matt Jacobs is determined to capture national hero, Attorney, John Canon, and force Canon to join with him in murdering the President and destroying America.

There are explosions, car chases, harrowing airplane trips and even F18 fighter jet rides in the race to evade capture and/or death at the hands of Jacobs. Canon manages to stay one step ahead and with Stephanie Savard at his side, finds not only an ally and but, perhaps even love. Sheriff Ned Tranes takes the brunt of attacks in his attempt to protect John and when he gets shot, is forced to sit on the sidelines for a while. But, not for long.

In this book, Howell takes us deep inside the mind of a terrorist, Matt Jacobs, and shows how committed he is and how much he believes in his cause. Matt Jacobs sees America as Satan and the president as the leader of Satan and feels fully justified in committing murder to bring the country to its knees. And, in that process, securing himself a place in heaven. Murder in the name of Allah.

But, he underestimates John Canon. And it helps that a bit of betrayal is added into the mix.

This is a nail-biter. Each attack on Canon escalates until there appears to be no hope of survival. But, in true John Howell fashion, there is a climatic twist. If you like thrillers, you are going to enjoy this conclusion to the Canon series when “Our Justice” is finally served.

A Cold Tomorrow – Book Review #RRBC

5 star

In this sequel to the first book of the Point Pleasant Series,  A Thousand Yesteryears,  Mae Clair takes us on a fast-paced adventure that doesn’t end until the last page.

Katie Lynch stops to help a motorist in trouble and gets more than she bargained for. Mysteries begin unfolding all around.  A coded message, a policeman that vanishes into thin air and unexplained phenomena galore set the stage for A Cold Tomorrow .

We met the famous supernatural mythical creature, The Mothman, in the first book of this series. But, it is becoming almost as much of a character in these books as are the people. Mae gives us a glimpse into the creature’s mind when it is wounded and Caden  is able to communicate with him. All the characters in this story capture me. The two brothers, Ryan and Caden, both in law enforcement – rugged and good looking, Katie Lynch, a single mom raising a son, Eve Parrish, owner of the famed historic hotel, Sarah who loves digging around in archived historical records, and even Katie’s renegade mom who really comes to life and redeems herself in this novel.

Mae does an exquisite job of weaving this story with lots of unexpected and unpredictable twists and turns. Giving the reader a deeper look into Indrid Cold and Evening Lach, and their connection to the Mothman, only adds another other-worldly dimension to this story. If you like a great mystery with a lot of adventure and a little romance thrown in, you’ll love both of Mae Clair’s books in the Point Pleasant series. Looking forward to the third book, coming soon!

Guest Post – Author, Tina Frisco

Meet my guest today, Author, Tina Frisco. tina-4a

She has a brand new book release and I am happy to share it here.

Thank you for inviting me to be a guest on your blog, Jan. I appreciate this opportunity to talk about my new book, Vampyrie: Origin of the Vampire.

Vampyrie is not your typical vampire novel. It’s based in science and brings the myth of the vampire into the realm of possibility. Although the book is not part of a series, two primary characters from my first novel, Plateau, play major roles.

One day during my morning walk, the word Valkyrie came to mind. As you may know, a valkyrie is one of a host of female helping spirits of the god Odin in Norse mythology. Depicted as both loving and bloodthirsty, valkyries decide who lives and who dies in battle. They also assist Odin in transporting his favorites among the slain to Valhalla, the hall where he houses the dead whom he deems worthy of dwelling with him. In my novel, Valkyrie becomes Vampyrie and Valhalla becomes the Haven.

I always have been fascinated by the myth of the vampire and often have wondered if the phenomenon actually could exist. My background in medicine led me to speculate about how this might have a basis in reality. If rooted in science, how might this myth come to life? The most likely answer would be as a physical disorder or disease.

As I began writing, the story began unfolding. What if vampires were not the undead, but rather the dying? What if there were two factions among vampires: the sustained and the unsustainable? And what if those factions were at war with one another over the life of a young woman who promised them a future?

vampyrie_cover_for_kindle

Vampyrie brings the myth of the vampire into the realm of possibility.

My protagonist, Phoebe Angelina Delaney, is a reluctant genius and a compassionate hothead. She loves deeply, agers quickly, often acts before she thinks, and curses with abandon.

She finds herself in a pitch-dark underground and doesn’t remember how she got there. Did she drink too much alcohol and wander off in a stupor, or was she kidnapped by a malicious element determined to make her life a living hell? Sir Michael Alan David is a vampire – an enigma, charismatic and mysterious, who weaves in and out of Phoebe’s life. Does he intend to use his title as a ruse to draw her closer to an unearthly fate, or is he a cloak-and-dagger knight in shining armor? Too many secrets have been kept for too long. Phoebe must unravel the mystery in order to survive.

EXCERPT:

“Where in the blazes am I?” Phoebe mumbled under her breath, afraid someone might be listening. “And how in the world did I get here?”

She crept along the cold stone wall, carefully placing one foot in front of the other. The last thing she remembered was saying goodnight to Lunah outside the club. Her head was splitting.  The pain dulled her normally sharp mind. Dazed and confused, she dropped to her hands and knees and crawled in pitch-black darkness.

Shivering in the damp cold, she waved her hand in front of her eyes but couldn’t see a thing. She felt drugged, hung over, and everything in her wanted to lie down. Fear growled in her belly, threatening to explode into unbridled terror. But Phoebe wasn’t the type to cave in the face of danger. If she were ever again to see the light of day, she knew she had to pick up the pace.

“Get up, you fool!” she whispered emphatically. “You’ve no idea what might be lurking in this damned snake pit.”

She tried to ignore the throbbing in her head. She tried to shrug off feeling she was captive in the lair of some hungry beast. She forced herself to stand, despite feeling lightheaded and dizzy. Guiding herself with one hand pressed against the wall, she walked slowly and paid close attention to every step. She didn’t want to make a sound.

Just when she started to rebound, something damp prickled her fingers from between the stones.

“Damn!” Startled by the sound of her own voice, she cupped her hand over her mouth as she lurched backward. The jolt cleared her mind. She was in a cave or underground tunnel.

“I’ve got to find a way out of this hellhole!” she murmured, too frazzled to whisper. She couldn’t help giving voice to the menacing panic . . .

She forced herself to keep going, in a futile attempt to keep the phobia at bay. But it resolved to have her in its greedy clutches. Barely able to breathe, her mind flooded with profanities, and escalating terror insisted on having a voice.

“Dammit!” squeezed its way out as she panted and broke into a sweat.

She couldn’t help repeating the obscenity until it echoed down the corridor, eerily and with telltale foreboding . . .

Her head was pounding. She felt as if she were spinning round and round on some horrific amusement park ride. Yet she knew she hadn’t drunk enough alcohol to cause such nauseating vertigo. She lost her balance and fell back against the wall, gasping for air and fighting to stay conscious. Her body slid down until she sat with her hands braced flat on the ground. The feel of the cold stone against her skin helped her catch her breath.

“Snap out of it, Pheebs; you’re stronger than this,” she whispered, mindful the darkness might be concealing something deadly. She repeated the reproach until she finally heard herself.

When the panic lifted, she grasped the flashlight with her teeth, leaned back against the wall, and slowly pushed her body upward until she stood. Although trembling and lightheaded, she managed to maintain her balance.

She brushed her hands together to remove the grit, but instead of falling to the ground, it rolled across her wet palms and stuck to her fingers. Aiming the flashlight downward, she saw something red covering her hands. Frantic to get rid of the nasty stuff, she rubbed her palms across the wall until they were chafed. But the red slime seemed to penetrate her skin. When she realized what it was, a sickening horror struck and dared her to regain composure.

“Oh my god, it’s blood!”

Shrieking, the flashlight dropped from between her lips and broke as it hit the ground. But Phoebe was too spent and disoriented to notice.

EDITORIAL REVIEW

I was hooked from the first paragraph. Phoebe has an indomitable spirit. I was rooting for her throughout her quest and her ordeals. As the tension built, I found myself riveted to the page . . . and then the next page and the next. I read this book in two days. I could barely put it down when outside forces demanded my attention. There is also an underlying metaphysical angle to the narrative that only enhanced the pleasure I experienced while reading this wonderful, wonderful story. —Andrew Joyce, Author of Yellow Hair and Redemption: The Further Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer

Introducing the third book in the John J. Cannon Trilogy – Our Justice

our-justice-front

The terrorist leader and financier Matt Jacobs has figured out a way to eliminate the President. He is relying on John Cannon’s stature as a hero to help him carry it off. John finds himself walking the fine line of pretending to help Matt while trying to figure out a countermeasure to the plan.

The action begins with John fearing for his life. Clearly, whoever is trying to get him has a mission to accomplish and the elimination of John is at the top of the to-do list. The quest to survive takes John and his love, Stephanie from the beaches of Port Aransas to West Virginia and finally to Matt Jacob’s corporate headquarters at the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. There John finally understands what he needs to do to protect both he and Stephanie from further mayhem.

The third book in the John J. Cannon Trilogy brings together two strong wills for a showdown. The question to be answered is who will feel the satisfaction that the achievement of justice delivers? John, Matt or neither?

Our Justice is available on Amazon and KDP now in e-book format for preorder at $2.99 with shipments starting on September 23rd. The paper edition will be available on Amazon September 23rd at $14.99. Here is the link for pre-order of the e-book https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LDFM9WM?ref_=pe_2427780_160035660

Excerpt.

I see out of the corner of my eye that Ned is on the phone. Hopefully, he’s calling in reinforcements since it looks like the SUV is gaining on us. Just as the rear window of the Focus blows inward, he finishes the call. Hundreds of pieces of glass hit Ned and me. Luckily, it’s shatterproof stuff, so we’re mostly okay cut wise. Ned crouches down and fires three quick shots with his 9MM. In the mirror, the SUV swerves to the left and almost explodes after it rams a parked car. “Stop,” Ned yells.

I slam on the brakes, which nearly tosses Ned through the windshield. “For shit’s sake, I don’t have a seatbelt on, junior, so take it easy. Just stop and turn around.”

Next up for me: I’m turning back to one of the first books I ever published and giving it the sequel it’s been waiting for. I’ve been distracted since publishing Graveyard of Empires almost a year ago and it’s past time that I finally wrap up Book II and get it out into the world.

This is a series I’ve been writing for personal enjoyment, not something I’ve tried to write to market or how people expect a book of the genre to be. The good news is, as soon as I finish book II, the third book in the series will be right around the corner and published shortly thereafter.

Book II will be called Collision of Worlds

Book III will be called Division of Power

Once those books are finished, I’ll turn back to World on Fire and finish the second book in the series. I already have it mapped out, I just need to settle down and actually put the words on paper. I did write a prequel short story to Raven’s Peak called The Ninth Circle (which is available for anyone who signs up for my newsletter: http://www.LincolnCole.net/signup) and I plan on adding short pieces to add depth to the world over time. I love the world and the characters and it took almost no time to write this short story, so I’m hoping that the second book in the series will come just as fast!

HIS REVENGE

BY JOHN HOWELL

His Revenge1

Thrillers aren’t normally my favorite read, but His Revenge by John Howell sucked me in by the end of the first chapter!

John Cannon is a somewhat naïve successful business attorney who finds himself in the thick of a terrorist plot to destroy the American economy, embarrass the president and send the world into a tailspin.

At the beginning of the story, John barely escapes death in a horrible explosion that claims the life of his ally, Jason. But, because their efforts saved thousands of lives, John is now considered a national hero. Although saddened by the fact that Jason didn’t make it, he begins a slow recuperation. The blast has left him temporarily blind and paralyzed. The local police chief, Ned Tranes, takes personal responsibility for looking after John until the FBI and Secret Service arrive on the scene. But, as it turns out, there is no time for mending.

A meeting with the president is arranged and John is to receive a medal of honor for his bravery. After a side-trip to New York to pick up Jason’s sister, Stephanie, they proceed with FBI protection to a memorial service for Jason. He is stunned when a bullet intended for him hits her instead.

The action continues but culminates when John is drugged and taken prisoner by the terrorist group known as Desert Wolves. The plan is to use John to make an international broadcast in which he speaks lies about the American government and their involvement in oil control from the Middle East. These lies will send the country into chaos and the economy into a nose dive.

Not only are the terrorists forcing John to make the broadcast, but are also threatening to kill Stephanie and approximately 2,000 other people at Bethesda Naval hospital where she is recovering from the gunshot wound.

As events unfold and suspense builds, there doesn’t seem to be any viable means for John to escape from this deadly situation without thousands of people losing their lives.

If you like a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat with a splash of romance thrown in, you’ll enjoy His Revenge.
